They prefer habitats with sandy bottoms, leaf litter, and minimal submerged plants, often found in the shade of old growth forests. While they are not known for shoaling, these social fish establish territories in the lower levels of the tank. Males display vibrant colors to attract females, so it’s best to have a mix of both genders. Domestic cherry barbs have been selectively bred to have a redder hue compared to their wild counterparts.
