Cardinal tetra 2-3CM Cardinal tetras are similar to their cousin, the Neon tetra (P. innesi), but their German name, Red Neon, accurately describes their main difference – these fish have a red belly that the Neon tetra lacks. In their natural habitat, Cardinal tetras can be found in clear water streams and creeks that are protected from extreme temperatures by the shade of the forest. The changing seasons bring distinct variations to their environment, and during the wet season, adult fish take shelter among the marginal vegetation and spawn after seeking refuge among the leaf litter above the stream bed. Cardinals thrive in soft water, where they can live longer, grow larger, and display more vibrant colors. Unlike many small tetras, they have a longer lifespan that can be measured in years when kept in captivity. While they are sociable fish, observations in the wild have shown that they often forage in small groups of 5-15 individuals before coming together to form larger shoals. To showcase their beauty, it is best to keep Cardinal tetras in a well-furnished aquarium as a large shoal. Their colors truly shine in softwater environments.
