American Flagfish 3-4CM The American Flagfish gets its name from the vibrant patterns on the males’ sides, which during breeding season closely resemble the Stars & Stripes. These fish are typically found in lush ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. For their aquarium, it’s best to have a well-established setup filled with hardy or fast-growing plants, along with some floating cover to soften the light, which they really enjoy. Since American Flagfish are omnivores, they may munch on delicate, soft-leaved plants. It’s important to have effective filtration while keeping water movement gentle to mimic their natural environment. Generally, these fish are quite peaceful unless they are in breeding mode. A spacious tank with plenty of hiding spots can help minimize any potential conflicts during spawning. Any aggression usually targets their own kind, but with enough space and visual barriers created by decor and plants, this shouldn’t be a major concern. Suitable tankmates should be of similar size and temperament, thriving in cooler, slightly alkaline water. American Flagfish often graze on various algae in the tank, but if algae is scarce, it’s essential to supplement their diet with plenty of greens to ensure they get the nutrients they need and to prevent them from damaging delicate plants. Young American Flagfish may look rather dull and olive green in a shop tank, but once they adapt to the right conditions, the males will display stunning colors. Using a dark substrate can help them feel more secure and enhance the brilliant hues of the mature males.
