African banded barb (Barilioides Barb) The Barilioides Barb is a gentle and timid species that thrives in tranquil, mature softwater aquariums. In its natural habitat, this species is widely distributed and can be found in many slow-moving bodies of water that are rich in vegetation and have high oxygen levels. These shy fish are known to spend the sunniest parts of the day hidden among the shady plant cover, coming out to feed during the early morning and late afternoon. To create a suitable environment in the aquarium, it is important to mimic these natural conditions as closely as possible, using dark decorations and abundant plants. Floating plants can help to soften the light. The water should be soft and acidic, with a gentle current. Incorporating bogwood and Indian Almond Leaves (Terminalia catappa) can be very advantageous as they release tannins into the water, providing extra hiding spots and creating a more natural ambiance (the Indian Almond Leaves will need to be replaced periodically as they break down); Barilioides Barbs tend to display their most vibrant colors in tannin-stained water. This species is best kept in larger groups (10 or more) in tanks that are at least 3 feet long. While they will shoal loosely, males can be somewhat aggressive towards one another, typically establishing a hierarchy where the largest and most colorful individuals are the most dominant. Ideally, the tank should be designed with numerous hiding spots among the plants and decorations, allowing fish to escape from each other when necessary. If the aquarium is too small or lacks sufficient hiding places, the subordinate males may be bullied by the dominant ones. Nevertheless, Barilioides Barbs are generally quite reserved and peaceful with other species; they should not be kept with any large, boisterous, or aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates could include dwarf cichlids (such as Pelvicachromis sp. for an African theme; Apistogramma or Mikrogeophagus sp. if you prefer not to stick strictly to that theme), small catfish (like the tiny Microsynodontis sp. for the African theme, or the South American Corydoras which make excellent companions), kuhli loaches, and more.
