The piece began as a linocut relief print, where I carved the image from my notebook onto a linoleum block, inked it, and then pressed it onto paper—bringing the initial concept to life in a bold, graphic form. From there, I expanded on the idea by painting a more realistic version of the scene, adding depth and nuance to the imagery of light bulbs being harvested, like crops from a field. The painting draws inspiration from Ember City, a story where artificial light replaces the stars, weaving this idea into a surreal narrative about creating opportunities. While the imagery touches on themes of foraging and harvesting, the heart of Harvesting the Light lies in its message of resilience: when the world doesn’t provide, you have the power to grow and harvest your own light—your own opportunities.
