- Description Breaking Free Title: Breaking Free – Open Edition Print About the Original Painting Breaking Free is a deeply personal work that reflects my journey toward self-discovery and empowerment. The painting depicts a woman, underwater and surrounded by a starry sky, encased in fragile blue-and-white china doll parts. Shattering out of these constraints, she reaches towards the jellyfish and dragonflies, symbols for faith and transformation. Before fully committing to pursuing a career as an artist, I held a wide range of jobs—from paralegal work in a law office to an eddy current technician in nuclear power plants. All my life I was told to get a “real job” and that college was unrealistic. Unfortunately, I listened, and spent over a decade in one unfulfilling job after another. By the time I turned 30, I realized I had spent too many years chasing the wrong things, and it was time to pursue my true passion—art. Returning to college to complete my BFA in Fine Arts, I knew that I needed to release not only my old career goals but also the societal expectations that had been placed on me. This was a time of personal empowerment—a moment of breaking free from the molds I had been shaped by as I transitioned into womanhood. Breaking Free captures the act of shedding those limiting beliefs and embracing the vibrant, authentic self kept hidden for so long. My hope is that when you view this piece, it inspires you to break free from any molds that society, family, or friends may have tried to box you into.
